Bike paths on former rail lines, the Route verte crossing the province, linear parks along rivers, mountain bike centres and electric bike rentals: Quebec is pedalled from May to October. This guide gathers Quebec’s cycling venues, trails, parks, centres and rental shops, with each one’s listing, distances and services.
Our favourites
Lachine Canal, Montreal. A two-hundred-year-old, 14.5 km waterway that also serves as an urban corridor for cyclists, with a path maintained from mid-April to mid-November.
Le P’tit Train du Nord, Laurentians. A 234 km trail between Bois-des-Filion and Mont-Laurier, on asphalt or stone dust, from historic station to village: pick a section that suits the kids.
La Route des Champs, Montérégie. From Chambly to Granby, among fields, orchards and hills, on a route that is 90% paved with little elevation gain.
Cycloroute de Bellechasse, Chaudière-Appalaches. 74 km fully paved along two former railway lines, with little elevation gain: a safe path, perfect for the whole family.
Au Fil des Rivières, Lac-Saint-Jean. A 45 km loop between Albanel and Girardville, through the forest and along blueberry fields and rivers, with a low level of difficulty.
Choosing your route
Former rail corridors (linear parks) are flat, paved or stone dust, and perfect for a first twenty- to thirty-kilometre ride. Regional circuits offer villages, rest stops and viewpoints every ten kilometres. Check the listing for surface, elevation and nearby rentals.
Renting
Rental shops near the paths offer hybrid and electric bikes, trailers and child seats; book for July weekends. An electric bike doubles the reachable distance without changing the effort, and turns hilly routes into a stroll.
With kids
A six-year-old pedals ten to fifteen kilometres on the flat with breaks; in a trailer or a seat, the little ones follow without limit. Choose a path with a destination (beach, ice cream stand, park) halfway, and ride back into the wind as little as possible.
